Several changes from the 2000 play are currently being incorporated for the 2010 production.
The text of the play has been thoroughly revised by the script editors Christian Stückl and Otto Huber. One of their tasks was to present more clearly the conflict leading to the arrest and sentencing of Jesus. Particular attention will be paid to the presentation of the political conditions, with a more detailed focus on the character of Pontius Pilate.
In the process of revising the Passion Play script that dates back to the 19th century, Christian Stueckl and his dramatic advisor Otto Huber were supported by a theologian.
There are also several new roles for the 2010 Passion Play. A new addition is the double-cast principal part of an angel. Also two new female roles have been created: the wife of Pontius Pilate and a female sinner presented for stoning. The role of Veronica who encounters Jesus on the way to the crucifixion is double-cast and thus elevated to the group of principal parts alongside Mary and Mary-Magdalene.
Another change is that the play starts in the afternoon, in order to show the scene of the crucifixion at dusk. In 2010, the performances will start at 2.30 p.m. ending at 5.00 p.m. After a break, which can be used for dinner, the second part will be performed in the evening, starting at 8.00 p.m. until approximately 10.30 p.m.
