Under the direction of Christian Stückl, the text underwent its biggest revision since 1860. Working with Otto Huber, Stückl worked to eliminate all traces of anti-Semitism. He also gave greater individuality to the main characters, with Jesus struggling to maintain his faith, rather than resigning himself to his fate. In another major change, 2,000 new costumes and 28 new pieces of scenery were created, thanks to Oberammergauer set designer Stefan Hageneier. Markus Zwink, who had been musical director since 1990, updated and rearranged Dedler's score. In the 40th season, 520,000 spectators attended. |
